  • Knowing that 9-1-1 is only for life-threatening emergencies where I need urgent help from police, fire or ambulance.
  • Reporting crimes online, or calling the non-emergency line when I need help from police, but I am not in immediate danger.

  • Refraining from calling 9-1-1 and the non-emergency line for non-police matters. Referring to an alternative resource for general questions and complaints.

  • Understanding that if I call from a cellphone, 9-1-1 will not receive my exact location information.

  • Knowing that an address will always be best, but landmarks, cross streets and city names will also help first responders find me in an emergency.

  • Ensuring that I will stay on the line if I call 9-1-1 by accident so that the call taker can ensure my safety.

  • Keeping my phone away from young children and ensuring that it’s stored safely to prevent pocket dials.
